Saw Wai Burmese: စော ဝေ) is a famous Burmese poet. On January 22, 2008, Saw Wai was arrested by the Burmese authorities to publish a poem criticizing secret Than Shwe, the head of the ruling military junta in Myanmar. The poem, titled "February, the XIV" was published in the Journal based in Rangoon Achit (Love Journal.) If the first letters of each line of the poem were put together, read "Power Crazy Than Shwe" in Burmese. [1] [2]
In 1988, Saw Wai was fired from his job in the government media office to take part in the uprising of 8888. [3] At the time of his recent arrest, he went White Rainbow, a group of artists and writers working to raise funds for AIDS orphans. [3] Saw Wai is known for his romantic poems [4] and is also a performance artist.
On January 28, 2008, Saw Wai's wife, Nan San San Aye tried to see her husband in Insein prison. He was not allowed to see her husband.
On November 11, 2008, the National League for Democracy (NLD) spokesman Nyan Win said Wai [5] was sentenced to two years in prison for publishing a poem mocking head gasket Than Shwe, in the weekly Love Journal ("General Than Shwe is a foolish with power "). [6]
